THE LADDER WHALER COMPETION
Can you help with more information regarding these miniature oars which were bought (with other items) in an auction by Tracy Wrigley. We know that they were part of a trophy won by members of the Electrical Department in the run-up training for the inter ship whaler regatta in Bermuda during April, 1955.

DAVE ANDREWS

Back in the distant days of 1955 we were heading up the American west coast. The eventual turnabout was Canada and for months there was talk of taking on the various local navies in regattas.
So many of our worthy men put their all into daily training and come the day at Esquimalt our many teams bent their backs in strenuous effort as they subsequently wiped the Canadian opposition and figuratively kept the induvial silverware. Figuratively should be explained as when we sailed south some days later all the highly polished cups were handed back to our worthy hosts and many on the lower deck wondered who benefited the dollars given out as prize money.
Dave Andrews, now a proud Tasmanian resident, sends this photo of the Boys Cup Winners at Esquimalt managed to be triumphant, using as Dave points out, a loaned Canadian cutter
